Up Close & Personal with Makers Dozen

***PRESS (PR) SAMPLE NOTICE ***

Hey Sugas!!! In the baking world, a bakers dozen is commonly understood to mean 13. In the indie maker world, Makers Dozen is the hottest new thing in collaborations featuring 12 core brands and a guest maker every month. That’s right, Makers Dozen is launching June 1st and in addition to a few offerings, I am delighted to share with you an exclusive, inside look into the 12 makers known as Makers Dozen!

How will the box be run?

The Makers Dozen is a collaboration between 12 makers with a different guest maker joining monthly. Polishes will be sold on maker’s individual web sites.

Who are the founding brands?

The founding makers are:

  • Olivia T. (Copacetic Cosmetics)
  • Jenn D (NeVerMind Polish)
  • Jannalyn M (LYNB Designs)
  • Sacha J (Jior Couture)
  • Angie C/N (Sassy Pants Polish)
  • Sabrina B (Zombie Claw Polish)

  • Anetress M (Baby Girl Lacquer)
  • Alicia C (Leesha’s Lacquers)
  • Cynthia D (Alter Ego)
  • Simone V (Ms Sparkle)
  • Lisette V/J (Inspirrations)

What is the frequency?

We will be doing this monthly. So 13 polishes released each month.

Pricing:

The pricing is set my each individual maker depending on their own preferences.

How is Makers Dozen different from other boxes that are currently available?

Makers Dozen is so much different, and it’s really exciting. From day 1 to now the idea has changed so much and it’s a great thing. We will be releasing polishes with a cap of 40 so they will stay exclusive and it’ll be exciting to get your hands on! Because of this cap polishes may sell out super quick, but we aren’t having a cut off date. If they are still available in the next monthly they will still be able to be purchased. Also each bottle will be numbered just like works of art should be! We will have 13 drawings in our group to allow members to win free shipping, discounts, etc. The makers are so excited to be engaging with the members I really think it will be something special. Another thing that sets us apart is that each month will be a rainbow of colors! We all rotate colors each month so every month there will be 13 different colored polishes!

Why ‘Maker’s Dozen’?

Makers Dozen was a name that the group came up with together, a play on bakers dozen, and it fits so perfectly!

Let’s meet the makers, shall we???

Enjoy…

Describe yourself in 5 words

His: Energy, Focus, Workaholic, Family, Big Heart Her: Nice, Caring, Shy, Family, Laid Back.

What are your top 3 favorite things to do? (Outside of making polish and filling orders…lol)

Family Time, Sports and Exercise. Both of us. Things we do together.

When and why did you decide to start a nail polish line?

It started as way to make some side money to pay for Sonja’s polish habit. It soon became a real business that needed my help. Sonja found out that it was more fun to wear the polish, then to make and sell it. So I started playing and away we went. I had never made polish before and knew nothing about the business, but we learned and it’s my baby now. Sonja now makes all the soap which she enjoys and I handle the polish part.

What makes your brand different?

Parrot Polish was set up to help Bird Rescues in the State of Florida. We now help many things, mostly children and animals. Its always wonderful help those in need and the animals that can’t help themselves. We love our birds and dogs I hope to keep helping in the future.

What is one thing you’re willing to share that your customers would be surprised to know about you?

Hmmmm Maybe that I am not a Laid Back person. I often go crazy over tiny details and everything has to be perfect.

What advice/tips/best practices would you give someone wanting to start their own polish company?

Advice …. Testing and save your money! Test your polishes a lot! It is very costly to start a polish biz. Start slow and build a following, I went cannonball style and had issues when I first started.

Besides your own, what other brands do you own/wear?

Sonja wears many other makers polishes. Hardly ever does she wear Parrot Polish. She wears Vapid, Enchanted and F.U.N. Lacquer

What is one of you favorite collections or polishes you created?

Hmmmm… I would say “What Dreams are made of” the collection just launched this week. Others would Black Magic the Thermal and The Old Love Collection as Both were Game changers for Parrot Polish.

How did you come up with your company name and logo?

We love Parrots for their colors and personality. It all started with my grandmother moving in. She owned love birds that I grew to love. When she passed I got my own and I talk and work with them daily. Parrot Polish just seemed to be Happy and Colorful.

If you weren’t in the indie polish business, what’s another product you would have liked to create?

I would say Make up. We still may in the future but Parrot Polish and My other job keep me pretty busy. I picture glowing make up and thermal lipstick..lol

Any spoilers that you care to share about future collections, products, etc?

Spoilers ….. A new website is brewing and the New bottles are finally here. Its been a big year so far.

In 10 words or less, what would be your brand slogan?

Polish so Bright and Beautiful it will make you smile Everytime!

What do you love most about being an indie polish maker?

I would say My customers! I love the fan groups and the customers as they challenge me and keep me focused.

What other brand (just 1) would you like to collaborate with?

Hmmm…. I talk To a few makers but If I only had one I would say ILNP. Since Day one I have been a fan. I admire ladies that grow their company and have a family too! Its all so tough to Juggle. I also have never talked to her, but I’m sure someday I will.

What is your greatest accomplishment to date with your brand?

My greatest accomplishment would be the design of the entire brand. It was just a vision when you start and now its a trademarked brand sold worldwide. It takes a life of its own at times.

What is one challenge you’ve faced in business and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge to all of us is to create. The day you stop or get burnt out its like you step back a bit. We all know that the good brands endlessly sell and grow. I would say we all overcome that daily and push on, because if you don’t your done!

Up Close and Personal with Courtne King of Little Black Dress Polish

insta photo editor1457030056469
Name: Courtne King
Location: Odenton, Maryland
Birthday is July 22

Courtne, (without the ‘y’), is a local, to me, DMV gal with 2 sons, two female cats, and two male birds. The boys out number the girls, ‘but we’re smarter,’ she says. With her birthday on the cusp of Cancer and Leo and she has equal traits of both.

Favorite subject in high school and why?
I don’t recall having one, but high school is where I learned that science isn’t really my thing. I think for me it was Spanish.

If you were given a superpower, what would it be?
This is an easy one because my kids and I determined our powers because they’re in a superhero phase. I can telepathically push people to do and say what I want. That way my kids will be good obedient little robots. Because that’s what all parents really want.

If your life were a reality show, what would the name of your show be?
My reality show would be called Jack Of All Trades: What’s She Gonna Try Next. In each episode I’d talk about a job, subject, craft, or activity that I’ve obsessed over. That would run 5 or 6 seasons.

Favorite childhood memory?
Any time spent with my mom or dad.

Describe yourself in 5 words
crafty, humorous , over-stressed, creative, wise

What are you top 3 favorite things to do? (Outside of making polish and filling orders…lol)
My favorite things to do are spending time with my sons (getting rare now that they’re teens), read, and hang out with coworkers (I know, not very exciting).

When and why did you decide to start a nail polish line?
I’ve always wanted to do something “extra” with my life. Something beyond working everyday and raising a family. When my husband died a few years ago, his absence left a huge whole that I could fill with sorrow or with something positive and useful. I chose positive.

What makes your brand different?
My brand is geared towards women of all ages and all walks of life. I create unique neutrals for those who prefer a more subdued look, glitters for those who want a little sparkle, and a variety of creams, shimmers and other finishes to accessorize any woman, for any occasion.

What is one thing you’re willing to share that your customers would be surprised to know about you?
You might be surprised to know that I love making and selling polish, but I don’t paint other people’s nails. Friends ask and I decline. I feel like I’m just artistic enough to make designs on my own nails, but not anybody elses. I made one exception when my oldest sons girlfriend asked me to do her nails for prom. I couldn’t say no. She’s such a sweetie.

What advice/tips/best practices would you give someone wanting to start their own polish company?
For people who want to start their own polish business my suggestion is to do your research, and record all formulas even if they fail. You can learn a lot from a botched attempt.

Besides your own, what other brands do you own/wear?
I almost exclusively wear my own polish because I’m always in some phase of testing. As for other indies I have KB Shimmer, Literary Lacquers, Pretty Jelly and Digital Nails.

What is one of you favorite collections or polishes you created?
My favorite collection is my Back to Black collection because the inspiration came from my favorite recording artist Amy Winehouse.

If you weren’t in the indie polish business, what’s another product you would have liked to create?
If I weren’t making polish, I might have gone back to jewelry making or some form of it since I have all the tools. Lately I’ve considered making dangle charms for planners.

Any spoilers that you care to share about future collections, products, etc?
Spoiler alert: I’ve been working on a cuticle gel and cuticle oil for almost a year now. When I’m satisfied with my formula I’ll add them to my shop. I want to work on them this summer.

How did you come up with your company name and logo?
I used to make jewelry and I had an Etsy shop called Little Black Dress Accessories. When I decided to open my polish shop I came up with a long list of names. I had a hard time deciding on one so my coworker, now also my assistant, said, “why don’t you just use your old shop?” It worked, so I did. I came up with the logo because it was feminine and it fit the name of my shop.

In 10 words or less, what would be your brand slogan?
Little Black Dress…because every woman needs one

What do you love most about being an indie polish maker?
I have to express my creativity. I mean literally. I have to be learning a craft or making a craft. I have to have a project to work on. I think I might explode if I wasn’t creating something in some form or another. Making and selling polish fulfills all my creative needs. And I get to learn more about running a business.

What other brand (just 1) would you like to collaborate with?
I can only choose one?!? OK, after much deliberation I choose Pam Heil of Girly Bits Cosmetics…and Christy Rose of KB Shimmer. Ok, I cheated, sorry.

Favorite nail art technique?
My favorite nail art technique is stamping because it’s easy to do when you don’t have time to put a lot of work into a design. Second favorite is the ombre effect.

What is your greatest accomplishment to date with your brand?
My greatest accomplishment to date is surpassing my estimated income this quarter.

What is one challenge you’ve faced in business and how did you overcome it?
I don’t believe I’ve overcome any significant hurdle aside from getting the business up and running. There are several challenges coming up in the near future, but I’ll tackle each one as it comes.

Up Close & Personal with Jennifer Dzoga-Rosario of Nevermind Polish

Name: Jennifer Dzoga-Rosario

Birthday: August 29th

Who is your favorite superhero and why?
The Punisher – He’s badass like Batman but kills people.

If you were singing at Karaoke, what song would you be singing?
I don’t sing but if I had to pick, This Shit Will Fuck You Up – Combichrist

Top 3 favorite songs of the 90s?
*Beautiful People – Marilyn Manson
*Bullet with Butterfly Wings – Smashing Pumpkins
*Closer – Nine Inch Nails

Favorite childhood toy?
Probably no one will remember this toy and it’s totally going to date me but, when Vtech first started making kids toys they released a gaming system called Socrates. That was probably the source of my gaming addiction.

Describe yourself in 5 words
Introvert, sarcastic, passionate, bookish, fangirl

What are your top 3 favorite things to do? (Outside of making polish and filling orders…lol)
*I’m a huge nerdy, geek. I love anything to do with human biology & forensics.
*Gaming – I love me some Assassin’s Creed! And I’m currently obsesstual with Sims 4 and Minecraft.
*Creating things, not just nail polish but anything, I’m constantly staring a new art project.

What is one thing you’re willing to share that your customers would be surprised to know about you?
I used to want to be a forensic pathologist and perform autopsies but after I finished my bachelor’s I decided it wasn’t worth another 9 years of education.

How did you come up with your company name and logo?
It’s a name I came up with when I created a store in the game Second Life. I really like the abbreviation for Nevermind = NVM because the letters can flow into each other when written. I feel like it took forever to get my logo just right. I knew I wanted something gothy and messed around in photoshop until I created something I liked that also fit on a tiny polish bottle.

If you weren’t in the indie polish business, what’s another product you would have liked to create?
I love paper mache so probably that. I’ve created a couple of severed tentacles and a beholder for my hubby’s birthday that I’m really proud of but it’s a LONG process. You think drying times for nail polish are a pain, let me tell you…

Any spoilers that you care to share about future collections, products, etc?
Not really a spoiler at this point but I have a jelly collection coming out the end of April. And after that, if testing goes well there will be some multichrome, holo, flakie goodness coming.

What do you love most about being an indie polish maker?
Meeting other people that are so enthusiastic about nail polish. I launched at Polish Con Chicago and meeting everyone was the best part of that whole experience.

What other brand (just 1) would you like to collaborate with?
That’s tough, there are two that immediately come to mind but I’ll have to go with Supernatural Lacquer. SPN family represent!

Favorite nail art technique?
Gradients, they are so quick and easy but look so elegant.

Up Close & Personal with Lisette Valence-Jeffers of Inspurrrations Nail Polish

img_5489Name: Lisette Valence-Jeffers
Location: Lebanon, Oregon
Birthday: May 3

Who is your favorite superhero and why?
I’m going to go with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, not your traditional hero, but I like her attitude, how she doesn’t need a special outfit to ware to kick some butt, and all of her friends are there to help and support her.

If you were singing at Karaoke, what song would you be singing?
I love to sing but I’ve always been to nervous to sing solo. But if I had to do it probably anything by Madonna, before I started loosing my voice from steroid inhalers, I sounded kind of like her when singing.

Top 3 favorite songs of the 90s?
Anything from Depeche Mode, Erasure, New Order or The Cure. I was sort of a closet Goth after High School.

Favorite childhood toy?
My 3 Cabbage Patch Kids, Ingrid Dolores, Ramsey Skip and Inga Dorenna. I didn’t play house or school with them, my Cabbage Patch Kids were in a band with my friends Cabbage Patch Kid that lived down the street. They had instruments and everything that we made from other toys or household things we found. And the best part was I had a radio that recorded onto blank tapes, yes tapes I’m that old, and we would record us playing with the dolls and switching over to the radio and pretending the music on the radio was our Cabbage Patch band! I still have the tapes. LOL

Describe yourself in 5 words
Organized, sensitive, funny, guarded, and sarcastic. According to my husband my funny and sarcastic are the same thing.

What are your top 3 favorite things to do? (Outside of making polish and filling orders…lol)
I love to cook I’ve often thought about teaching cooking classes at my church. I’m noticing more and more young girls don’t know how to cook and go out to eat for all their meals. I’m also a big fan of TV/Movies, I rather have the TV on then listen to music. A lot of times when I post video on my Instagram I’ll say what’s on in the back ground because you can here it on the video. I also love costuming and sewing, I don’t get to do that much anymore because now all my free time is spent running my business. About 2 years ago my family and I went to Comic Con in Portland Oregon and I made steampunk Alice in Wonderland costumes for everyone, If you go to my Facebook page you can see the costumes there.

When and why did you decide to start a nail polish line?
In August of 2015 I knew my job was moving 2 hours North to Portland and I wasn’t sure when my last day was going to be. On a Friday I was looking on Pinterest at nail polish ideas and found a beautiful color, I clicked on the picture and it took me to someone’s Etsy page and she said that she made hand mixed nail polish. That absolutely blew my mind, I had no idea that was a thing and I had never even heard of “Indie polish” by that weekend I had researched, bought my first start up set of polish making stuff, and was super excited to dive into this world. On Monday I was told that would be my last week of work. After lots of praying and asking God and my husband and some friends what I should do, what I should name the company, how could I be different then every other brand, it literally came to me while I was driving home for the last time from my job. I already knew I wanted to have cats in it some how, I was listening to a Christion song on the radio and thought the name of the song would be a great polish name but I quickly realized that I could get into trouble with copy right laws for stealing someone’s name, but the song was named after a bible verse and I could use the verse as a name. That’s when I got the idea about finding verses that are inspired by the color. And then the name just came to me Inspurrrations! It had all of my favorite things inspiring bible verses, cats and nail polish, and as an added bonus I get to spread Gods word in a fun and nonthreatening way. I was on my way, I officially started my brand on September 15th 2015.

What makes your brand different?
The bible verse, I name each polish after a verse and I tie a tag onto the bottle with the verse on it as well. Most people don’t even realize that there is a bible verse and some people get super excited and search to see if there favorite verse is a color. I’ve had people tell me they save the tag to use as bookmarks in their bible or even tape them to their mirror so they can read it every morning while getting ready.

What is one thing you’re willing to share that your customers would be surprised to know about you?
When I was in my 20’s I was in a renaissance reenactment group called the SCA, that’s were my love for costuming and sewing came from. I also have a degree in Interior Design.

What advice/tips/best practices would you give someone wanting to start their own polish company?
1. Know what your getting into before you start. No matter what it is do a little bit of research. Two months after I started I did a GIANT show in Portland for Christmas, I’d never been to this show and up until this point had only sold at churches or other small venues in my area. This show killed me, both physically and mentally. Everything I had been doing, was not working here, at all, resulting in me losing tons of money. 2. Be open to change. The same event made me realize my display was to much to look at and people were confused by it so on day 3 of this 6 day event I packed up my display and just lay the polish on the table. I thought this was going to be a horrible idea but it turned out for the better I found a display that worked better and was easier for me to haul, set up and take down with out making a ton of trips to the car. 3. And know your worth. Calculate everything that goes into making a bottle of polish but especially your time. Don’t go into business not paying yourself for what you are doing, this is work, this is your job and your business you deserve to get paid for it.

Besides your own, what other brands do you own/wear?
Before my own I only wore Sinful Colors. I still sneak into Walgreens and take pictures and swatch some on a piece of paper so I can try to dupe it. LOL But right now I only ware my brand, you cant advertise to the check out lady, or a coworker if you have someone else on.

What is one of you favorite collections or polishes you created?
All of them have a little special story for me, but probably last summer when my parents came to visit, my mom and I stayed up late inventing colors then spent the next 3 days making, bottling and labeling. It was great having someone to help me but also having her around to talk to, and stay up late gossiping, like we did when I was younger and still living at home.

How did you come up with your company name and logo?
I wanted to use a cat and a bible because they reflected what I was about. I actually found the two pictures separately and combined them my self to design my own logo.

If you weren’t in the indie polish business, what’s another product you would have liked to create?
I had been considering sewing cat and dog toys to sell. Whether you love cats or dogs one thing is for sure, people are crazy for their pets and will spend money on them!

Any spoilers that you care to share about future collections, products, etc?
Yes! If it’s not already out when this gets published my mom has come up with a line of one of a kind nail polish bottle canvas art. She is using Inspurrrations nail polish to hand paint the pictures, they will be posted on my website to purchase and they can be personalize with your name, salon or nail account name.

In 10 words or less, what would be your brand slogan?
“The best little polish you aren’t buying!” At least for now, LOL. I got this from a magazine cover talking bout the show Gilmore Girls years ago, the article went on to say how great the show was but it’s popularity was moving slowly. I feel the same way about my polish, I have a lot of repeat customers and everyone of them tells me how much they love it, how fast it dries, and how chip resistant it is. I’ll get there one day, but for know my popularity is moving slowly. LOL

What do you love most about being an indie polish maker?
Getting to be a “mad scientist” in my kitchen, trying to figure things out especially when trying to dupe colors.

What other brand (just 1) would you like to collaborate with?
No one in particular. I would like to be a part of a combo with wax melts and bath bombs, we all come up with an idea that looks the same, for example blue and purple with glitter. So you can have a treat yourself day, melt the wax in your bathroom, drop in a bath bomb and paint your nails.

Favorite nail art technique?
I am master of none! I just paint my nails and add some sort of glitter topper over it. I would like to be able to stamp and I have several plates, but dang it, if I cant get that stupid stamper to pick up!

What is your greatest accomplishment to date with your brand?
On St. Patrick’s Day this year, one of my nail polishes was featured in a manicure in Nail it! magazine. That was super exciting for me, I was bummed to find out while I was at work, no one there shared in my excitement, but my family did so that was great.

What is one challenge you’ve faced in business and how did you overcome it?
Living in a small farming community. Our post office is closed on Saturday, most people around here are farmers or gardeners and painting there nails isn’t something they do. So I’ve had to go to shows in much larger cities to get really good sales, and repeat business.
