If so, how many? 2 little girls 3.5 and 1.5

Marital Status?

Married, IG friends refer to my hubby as Mr. Chuckles … he loves puns.

December 13th Sagittarius

Pets? If so, types and how many?

No pets, kids are enough, hahaha.

Beach or mountains?

New Englander..I adore both but just a smidge more of a beach person. I grew up summering on Cape Cod and it’s just part of my soul ♡

Comedy movie or suspense?

Suspense all the way! I not only have tattoos all over that refer to Stephen King but I also have the shilouette of the king of Suspense Alfred Hitchcock on my wrist.

Last time you laughed out loud?

Less than an hour ago. My girls are complete nut balls, so sweet and always making me laugh ♡

Favorite tv show?

Ohhh, this is so hard! I adored Revenge, it was well done the entire show and ended perfectly, I’ve never been able to say that about any other show. I enjoy watching GMM on YouTube as well as cooking shows on TV

Favorite holiday?

Halloween, Hands down! I look forward to it all year, I enjoy thinking and designing a costume, and seeing all the munchkins in their costumes on sugar highs. Best day ever.

Name one thing you can’t live without?

I assume this refers to an object as opposed to my family or friends or necessities like my glasses hahaha! If that’s the case I would have to say my paintbrush or my camera.. I just love capturing moments in time and they both help me do that ♡

What got you started doing your nails?

Wrist issues! I used to paint full canvas art, mixed media, bending jewelery wire to make chain link fences just for the background of canvas kinda art.. all that large movement and long work would murder my tendons and wrists and I just didn’t have the space or wrists to continue so I moved onto smaller canvases, and it’s so satisfying to save them on swatchsticks or Peel off basecoat and not have them take up as much room as full canvases.

What was the first brand you swatched for?

Becky from Hologlam Decals started sending me samples to try with my orders and things kinda snowballed so when Lisette of Inspurrrations Nail Polish mentioned her “Whole Shebang” deal of over 50 colors I jumped on it with the promise of dedicating a character or nailart to each color. I adore them both with all my heart and they’re both very close friends.

What is your favorite nail care product?

Shoutout to Misty from Lilly Anne’s Garden, holy moly do I use her products! I have her hand scrub at every single sink in the house, this is probably my all time favorite hand and nail care product in one! You can’t go in my purse or a single drawer of my helmer without finding at least 4 LAG’s a sickness hahah!

What kind of camera do you use to take your swatch photos?

Just my phone! I have an Android Galaxy S7 it has plenty of settings, filters and bells and whistles so I can get the color of the polish as I’m seeing it in real life. I don’t care much about my hands look as long as I’m displaying the color as true to life as possible!

What tips would you give an aspiring swatcher?

Don’t do it? Lol! Kidding… it’s cutthroat though! Love it! Have great lighting a real camera, unlike me, and remember it’s about the color and not your design.

How did you come up with your ‘nail name’?

I’ve held my handle for about 7 years on Twitter with my lovely 15 followers. I decided last August to give instagram a try and just continued with the same name. It’s a combination of nailart, me being an Archie Comics fan, and holic, meaning I’m addicted.. haha. Definitely belong in nailart anonymous

If you were to start an indie line of polish what would you name it and what would the first collection be inspired by?

I am pretty dedicated to @inspurrrationsnailpolish but I adore @dollishpolishlacquer I’d probably combine the methods of both and have “Archie Polish” and the names of my polishes would be Movie or TV related like I’ve always said I’d have a Princess Bride polish called “Indigo Montoya”

Who are some other swatchers and/blogs you follow?

I adore @mrs.miscostello ‘s swatches and once I am done househunting and set up an office I hope to do video swatches as beautiful and effortlessly as Misty. @ribbitsnailsnpuppytales Kristy has some beautiful swatches as well. I like to think my nailart sets me apart from other swatchers, but their application is always flawless.

Center Stage with Crystal Jones of Seriously Lacqueing

Name: Crystal Jones
Age: 28
Location: Rolla, Missouri

What TV show best represents your life?

I think a mix of Friends and Gilmore Girls.

Ideal way to spend 3 day weekend?

During this time of year probably gardening, at the pool or the river, and just relaxing with my boyfriend and kiddo.

What period of time would you go back to if you could?

The Roaring Twenties – I could definitely pull off being a goofy fun flapper.

Coffee or tea?

Describe yourself in 3 words:

Bouncy, Creative, Fun

How many hours per day do you spend on social media?

Maybe 1-2 total, I usually check it during morning and the evening and only at other times if I have a notification that requires a response.

What can you not get right, no matter how many times you try?

Free handing any kind of straight line. It looks like a drunk chipmunk drew on a nail with sharpie.

What are 3 of your strengths?

I’m motivated and kind of a perfectionist so is that two, if so then I’m also very loyal and if it is only one then I’m headstrong as hell.

Favorite 90s song and/or artist:

Helena by My Chemical Romance

How did you get started doing your nails?

I actually got started after getting a manicure and pedicure and it costing over $100 it was frustrating, chipped after only a couple days, and the color selection sucked. I ended up starting off by buying some OPI at Wal-Mart then by joining nail groups on Facebook and stuff got into nail art and learned about indie brands and vinyls, and stamping, and all this amazing stuff that you could do on your own and be so much more creative than a salon anyday.

What was the first brand you swatched for?

I don’t actually swatch for any brands right now I just got started around 6 months ago swatching and doing YouTube and IG, but the first thing I swatched on my own was a new collection from ILNP, and then the Colors by Llarowe Fall/Winter, and so on and so forth to all the ones I buy and swatch. I’d like to swatch for some of my favorite brands someday but there are always so many other amazing people out there too wanting to swatch, it’s intimidating sometimes.

What is your ‘go to’ cuticle oil?

My go to is Bliss Kiss Simply Pure used in combination with Vapid Nail Sauce in the Pegasus Poots scent.

You’re going on vacation for 2 weeks and can only take 3 bottles of polish ( not including base or top coat). What do you take?

Oh no, only 3, are you sure we can’t like negotiate that, this is like a hostage situation! But definitely XO by ILNP, and Tell Me About It, Stud from Glam Polish, and Berries in the Snow by Colors by Llarowe.

What tips would you give an aspiring swatcher?

Just keep practicing, if you go back on my Instagram all the way to the beginning you can see me own progression from sort of half okay cell phone pictures to badly posed, short horribly shaped nails and poses, up to where I am now. If it makes you happy then keep doing it, always do what makes you happy.

What’s one nail related item you can’t live without?

Nail art related would be vinyls, and nail in general related would probably be cuticle oil/nail sauce.

If you were to start an indie line of polish what would you name it and what would the first collection be inspired by?

Probably Seriously Lacqueing because I don’t have too many strokes of genius for naming things, and the first collection would likely be based on either my favorite songs or television shows.

Center Stage with Sharvonique Renee Fortune

Name: Sharvonique Renee Fortune
Age: 40
Location: Alexandria, VA

Kids? If so, how many?
Two kids. My daughter Jasmin and my son Julian. Both are in their early 20’s. It’s fascinating to watch them live their own lives and pursue their dreams.

Marital Status?
I became a widow in 2008, but I’ve been blessed to have someone special currently in my life.

June 6

Pets? If so, types and how many?
I’ve had all types of different pets throughout my life – a dog, gerbils, mice, guinea pigs, a rabbit, a rat, fish, and several cats. At the moment, I have two cats. An old moody fellow named Tigra, and a diva named Mika.

Beach or mountains?
Beach! I love the sun and warm places.

Comedy movie or suspense?
Both. Depends on my mood. I love TV and movies and need a variety to stay entertained.

Last time you laughed out loud
This morning. I’m forever laughing at random things.

Favorite tv show
This is tough to answer. TV is one of my closest friends. At this very moment, I’ll say Game of Thrones.

Favorite holiday
My birthday. Does that count?

Name one thing you can’t live without?

What got you started doing your nails?
I started polishing my nails in middle school. I’ve always had a strong interest in artistic things, and painting my nails was a form of creative expression.

What was the first brand you swatched for?
CrowsToes. I’m a fan of polish first and foremost. I’d polish my nails, then would take pictures for my own enjoyment and to show others. The creator of CrowsToes reached out to me one day and asked if I’d like to be an official swatcher for her. I was on cloud nine!

What is your favorite nail care product?
I can’t name just one. I have a tried-and-true arsenal of holy grail products to maintain my natural nails. Cuticle oil is an absolute must. I love Lucky 7 Nail Oil, Lush Lemony Flutter, and Dior Crème Abricot. Zoya Remove+ and HandsDown Ultra Nail Pads are my go-to’s for polish removal. Deborah Lippmann Cuticle Remover is a favorite, along with a glass nail file and a good ol’ orange stick.

What kind of camera do you use to take your swatch photos?
I use my iPhone 6 camera. It’s easy, simple and fast. I do have nicer more professional cameras, but it’s more work to set them up and use. I do loose depth of field, but I can live with the trade off in favor of simplicity.

What tips would you give an aspiring swatcher?
Even though I’ve only been swatching for less than a year, I do have a few tips to share. Lighting is extremely important. It improves the quality of your photos immensely and instantly makes them look more professional. I personally prefer not to use a flash because I think it alters the color of the polish and makes everything look too harsh. A good light source like a lamp or natural light are best. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. I also suggest copying hand poses of swatchers that you like. You’ll quickly learn how your hand moves and the way your fingers bend. There are some poses I’m simply not able to do because my hand doesn’t move that way, but I was able to see the way my hand naturally wants to pose. The most important thing is to have fun! I LOVE nail polish, and I think my passion for it comes across in my photos. If you’re able to capture that excitement in any way that’s unique to you, it will show in your work.

How did you come up with your ‘nail name’?
I was born with it. I figure my name is unique enough that I don’t need to come up with something else.

If you were to start an indie line of polish what would you name it and what would the first collection be inspired by?
Oooooh, I’ve often thought about starting my own indie line. I would name it Cartoon Chic and my brand would be inspired by cartoons and anime. I have a background in animation. My first collection would probably be a tribute to Jem and the Holograms.

Who are some other swatchers and/blogs you follow?
I follow a lot, actually, but the ones that have more artistic photos stand out to me the most. @pshiiit_polish, @iparallaxe, and @ressa_d come to mind. I also love a good macro, so I enjoy your photos and @lifelovelacquer, as well as others.

Center Stage with Samantha Hickernell

Happy FriYAY!! Anybody else looking forward to the weekend? I am!!! This weekend is full of fun and family…just the way I like it. My father-in-law’s birthday was the 7th, same as my dad, and we are all going to dinner to celebrate. And by all I mean all of his 7 children and their families, it’s sure to be…..amusing. Sunday, is cousins day and we’re taking the kids to Sky Zone, an indoor trampoline activity center. Please pray, send good vibes, whatever you do so we all come home in one piece…lol.

Enough about me, lets get into todays guest. Samantha Hickernell is her name and vlogging is her game! But you might know her better had Sam H Nails on YT and IG. With almost 800 subscribers on her YT channel and over 14k followers on IG, Samantha is proving that she is a force to reckon with. Samantha and I were “introduced” to each other on FB as we both swatch the Monthly Awareness Polish Box (MAPB). From there, I followed her on IG and started watching her very entertaining, yet informative YT videos and now I feel like we are old friends.

So let’s see check out what’s up with Samantha and how she got started.

Name: Samantha Hickernell
Age: 28
Location: Northern California

Kids? If so, how many?
I do, and I have three. They’re 10.5, 6.5, and just turned 3.

Marital Status?
Married for 8.5 years

July 1st

Pets? If so, types and how many?
We have a dog. She’s a golden retriever named Molly. We got her right after we got married and she’s a spoiled rotten, pain in the butt, extraordinarily loved, world traveling, fatty. Lol

Best Vacation Taken?
Spring break 2015, Dublin Ireland

Beach or Pool?

Best character trait
I am an incredibly giving soul. I’ll give you the food off my plate if you need it.

Favorite past memory?
Way too many to list. But I’ll be cliché and say our wedding day and the birth of our children.

Favorite food

Movie night at home or theater
At home, all of us piled up on our bed.

Favorite season

What got you started doing your nails?
When my husband and I moved to Italy their prices for a simple mani/pedi were outrageous. I couldn’t justify the money so I started painting them myself. I into nail art about 4 years ago. My best friend has flawless nails and she started doing mine when I was too pregnant to reach my toes. As I was watching her do them, I thought, “I can do that!” And she sent me to Robin Moses on YouTube and I haven’t looked back.

What was the first brand you swatched for?
All Mixed UP Lacquers and LJ is still one of my favorite indies out there

What is your ‘go to’ cuticle oil?
LillyAnnesGarden cuticle oil in any scent. It’s the best on the market.

Do you have swatch/mani routines?
Uhm, sort of. I need to put myself on a painting schedule to make life easier, but currently I have a box that I place my swatch mail in, in order of when it arrived/release dates. And I just work my way through it. After the official swatches are done they go in another “to use” box. I try to do as much nail art with them as possible before putting them all away and starting on the next batch.

What tips would you give an aspiring swatcher/blogger/vlogger?
Do NOT compare yourself to the people around you, ever. The only person you should be in competition with is yourself – if you can beat you out, then you’ve accomplished something great and will continue to get better and better and better. Social media can be an awful place to be, you get so wrapped up in your numbers, you let the hate bring you down, and then you forget why your originally started. make sure you’re doing this for YOU, because painting is something that brings you joy, and you’ll never go wrong.

What’s one nail related item you can’t live without?
LillyAnnesGarden cuticle care products

If you were to start an indie line of polish what would you name it and what would the first collection be inspired by?
I’ll never start my own line – mixing pigments to create a color is just something my non-artistic mind can grasp. With that said, I’m currently working on something, so keep your peepers peeled. I will say that it’s inspired by a soon to be released Disney movie, and the entire collection was brought about by 3 fantastic, flakie loving, fanatics. It’s going to be amazing!

Center Stage: Megan Glazer of Mindfully Polished

***Interview Disclosure****

Welcome back! 2017 is shaping up to be super exciting and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I know its only day 13 but I’ve got my sights set high. My Swatcher Spotlight series had a little bit of a makeover if you will. Still the same great content with amazing guests,  but as you can see I’ve changed the name to allow for all the diverse platforms being used to bring the nail polish world to the forefront. I thought long and hard because I wanted something that captured swatcher, blogger, vlogger, etc, all in one title. And so here you have Center Stage!

Today we are Center Stage with Megan Glazer of Mindfully Polished.

Megan Glazer
Age: 24
Baltimore, Maryland

Kids? If so, how many? None
Marital Status? Single
Birthday: July 4th
Pets? If so, types and how many? One dog, a Shetland sheepdog!

Do/did you make any New Years resolutions?
I’m trying to be more organized, and live a more healthy lifestyle.

Favorite holiday and why?
Independence Day; it’s my birthday!

Sweatpants or Jeans?

Would you rather go forward or back in time?

Describe yourself in 3 words:
Loyal, compassionate, and sassy

What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done and would you do it again?
I went to Chicago by myself for Polish Con. I would totally do it again!

If you are in a bad mood, do you prefer to be left alone or have someone to cheer you up?
I prefer to be left alone.

How did you get started doing your nails?
I used to HATE nail polish! But, one day, I decided to try some of the printed Sally Hansen manicure strips. I instantly fell in love, and fell down the polish rabbit hole!

What was the first brand you swatched/blogged for?
Pretty and Polished

What is your ‘go to’ cuticle oil?
DIFFERENT dimension. I love the pens and formula, and adore all of Missi’s scents!

You’re going on vacation for 2 weeks and can only take 3 bottles of polish (not including base or top coat). What do you take?
Cupcake Polish Berry Good Looking, Ever After Polish Bite Me, and DIFFERENT dimension Montego Red.

What tips would you give an aspiring swatcher/blogger?
Do not get discouraged!! You blog for YOUR love of polish, not for the affirmation of others! While receiving samples and swatch packages is an amazing opportunity, being able to share your passion for polish with others is the ultimate reward. Don’t lose your love by thinking that you have to compete with others.

What’s one nail related item you can’t live without?
Cuticle oil.

If you were to start an indie line of polish what would you name it and what would the first collection be inspired by?
I would name it after my blog, Mindfully Polished. I have two psych degrees, and would love for a brand to be named after something psychological! My first collection would be inspired by Jason Derulo songs, because he is my favorite artist.

Be sure to check Megan out here: Instagram / Blog / Facebook Page

Special Edition Interview: Jason Moore

You may be sitting there like who is Jason Moore? So let me address that right now. He is my best friend, my amazing, better half, simply put, he’s my husband. If you’re a reader of my blog, a friend on Facebook or a follower on Insagram, them I’m sure you’ve read or seen his name or nails along the way. During my journey of doing my own natural nails at home vs going to a salon and now getting into blogging, my husband has supported and encouraged me and even been the test dummy for many new, but failed nail techniques trials.

Seeing as though November marks my 2 year anniversary of #nomoresalons, I thought it only befitting to Spotlight my one and only. Please help me give him a warm welcome!!

Name: Jason Moore
Location: Frederick, MD
Birthday: July 29

As you may have imagined, I couldn’t ask him the same type of questions that I’d ask a Swatcher/blogger but I’m sure you’ll find the answers to what I did ask, funny and interesting. Here’s goes nothing…

Q: Name 5 indie brands I own
A: The Parrot one, Anonymous Lacquer, Vapid and Toxic

Q: Do you mean Tonic?
A: Yes, the ones by Lindsey
Hahaha, I have many, many more than that but he could only name 4. I’m schocked he remembered that many.

Q: To date, how much money have I spend on nail polish?
A: $567.32
I’m not sure how he came up with that number but I can tell you it’s a lot more than that since I’ve been purchasing indies since April of last year! Shhhhh, that will be our little secret.

Q: What 3 things have you learned since I started doing my own nails?
A: 1) similar does not mean the same, 2) everybody has a cuticle (or at least they should) and 3) there is a difference between indie, mainstream/drugstore and salon.

Q: What is the worst part of my nail polish addiction?
A: The fumes
Note to self, get a fan or open a window. I didn’t realize the fumes were that bad because I’m so use to it.

Q: What was the last blog post you read of mine?
A: Indie Maker Interview on Vernita Goodson

Q: What one piece of would you give to other husbands/boyfriends?
A: Just say yes!

Q: Name 3 Polish finishes
A: matte, shimmer and holo
I was very impressed with his answer for that question.

Q: Roughly, how many polishes do I own?
A: 350
I literally lol’d at this answer. Glad he doesn’t count. Or care for that matter.

Q: What color/finish/type of polish do you prefer me to wear?
A: matte, holo, Neon

Q: Name 5 nail art techniques
A: the water thing (watermarble), the sponge thing (gradient), stamping, free hand and the sticker things you hate (vinyls).

This has to be the best interview I’ve done to date! I had such a good time laying in bed asking him these questions. And I must say, I am in awe at some of his answers…I never knew he paid so much attention when I talk about polish. Trust me when I tell you, that these answers are his and his alone. I love him so much for participating in this interview for me. Do you all see why I love home so much?

That does it for today everyone. Thanks for joining me here and I hope you come back next time. Have a great weekend!

Swatcher Spotlight: Ann Marie Lipari

First, the Saints win their very first game over the Chargers on the 2nd and this month alone, I have interviews from 2 Louisiana natives. I really think my trip to the Big Easy is coming sooner than I think, I can just feel it! This months Spotlight is shining bright like a diamond from all the way down in Lafayette, LA on Ann Marie Lipari b.k.a. (better known as) Mani on the Move. I was first introduced to her through the many groups we have in common and all the wonderful swatches and manis I see on her blog and IG.

So, kick your feet up and relax awhile. We have a lot to learn about this young lady, so stay right where you are and check this out.

Name: Ann Marie Lipari
Age 27
Location: Lafayette, LA

Kids? If so, how many?
1 – 7 month old Scottish Terrier that I call my baby. Isn’t she adorable?

Marital Status?
Happily single

Pets? If so, types and how many?
My 7 old Scottish Terrier

Beach or mountains?

Comedy movie or suspense?

Today, my baby discover her tail & was chasing it! It was so cute & funny!

Favorite tv show?
The Big Bang Theory & Supergirl

Favorite holiday?

Name one thing you can’t live without?
Cell phone

What got you started doing your nails?
My mom & I used to stay up late on the weekends doing each other’s hair & nails. Once I got older I started experimenting with nail art & different trends. Plus I realized that literally before I would buy anything I would read a blog review, so why not start a blog & tell people about the products I’m using.

What was the first brand you swatched for?
Turtle Tootsie Polishes. I was thrilled when Chrissy asked me to swatch her Black Friday duo!

What is your favorite nail care product?
It’s a tie between Julep Be Strong (formerly Nail Therapy) & Glisten & Glow HK Girl Topcoat.

What kind of camera do you use to take your swatch photos?
It used to be my iPhone 5s but I’ve upgraded my phone so now I use an iPhone 6se.

What tips would you give an aspiring swatcher?
It’s ok to make mistakes, nobody is perfect. And don’t compare yourself to bigger swatchers when you are first starting out, they are started just like you, new to the world of swatching.

How did you come up with your ‘nail name’?
I was originally Manis Makeup & More (for all of 2 days) but I didn’t feel like it was original. After much thought I realized I always had my nails done or was doing them in the car so Mani On The Move was born.

If you were to start an indie line of polish what would you name it and what would the first collection be inspired by?
The collection would be inspired by superheroes but I’m not sure of a name. If there wasn’t a trademark on SuperGirl that would be an awesome indie name!

Who are some other swatchers and/blogs you follow?
Roselynn of Manicured & Marvelous, Kristi of Beginails, Megan of Mindfully Polished, Lisa of Cosmetic Cosmetic Sanctuary, & Lowthen of Manis Mankeup & Nina of Model City Polish are the main ones that I follow.

Thank you so much Ann Marie for hanging out with us today and we look forward to all your upcoming manis!

Swatcher Spotlight: Kaylyna Ramirez

Hello and happy Friday everyone! This week felt like it flew past, maybe because I was off Monday for Labor Day, but I’m not complaining. If you’ve checked my Post Schedule, you know it’s that time of the month again for another Swatcher Spotlight. This segment can be a little misleading being as though I interview both swatchers and blogger but Swatcher Spotlight has a ring to it..hehehe. Anyway, I know you can hardly contain your excitement and I can’t either because this month I am bringing you a young lady that I have quickly become good friends with, Kaylyna Ramirez aka KillaKays Nail Adventure!

You may be wondering how she got such a unique handle, I did too, but recently it came up in a FB post how names/handles came to be and this is what Kaylyna told us. “I was a bad@$$ growing up. Always getting into trouble so the neighborhood called me Killa Kay as I grew up the name stuck. I think mostly because a lot of the people don’t know how to say my name right. When I really got into nails they would say ‘look at Killa Kay’s nails’ but I like Nail Adventure better. My hubby makes fun of it but I like it. Makes me remember that just because you are a bad kid doesn’t mean you cant grow up.”

Let’s find out more out this lady making big waves in the indie nail community.

A: I’d say reading. I read everything. Lmao and nails of course!

Q: Favorite food?
A: BREAD! and cheese. Ugh love it. So basically pizza with light sauce and extra cheese

Q: Movie night at home or theater:
A: At home snuggled on the couch!

Q: Favorite season?
A: Winter…well winter isn’t much here in Fl…lmao 🙂

Q: What got you started doing your nails?
A: I’ve always painted my nails even as a little girl. My mom use to have a wicker basket filled with polish. I was in heaven.

Q: What was the first brand you swatched for?
Kristen from In the Name of Polish gave me my first polishes to swatch. She is truly an awesome person! And it was when I like had 400 or less followers! On Instagram!

Q: What is your ‘go to’ cuticle oil?
A: Tropical Fusion by In the Name of Polish and I also love Mango Scented Cuticle oil/butter by From the Hands of an Angel

Q: Do you have swatch/mani routines?
A: Nope. I do it whenever I can. Daily. Never sure what time though. Lmao

Q: What tips would you give an aspiring swatcher?
A: Don’t give up. Apply. If you don’t get accepted. Wait a little while and apply again! And always try to improve. No one is perfect. There is ALWAYS room for improvement. You have to remember that an indie brand might not accept you because your lighting is wrong or you don’t have enough followers. Fix that. They run a business and have to have certain standards when choosing swatchers. Don’t give up!

Q: What’s one nail related item you can’t live without?
A: Tropical Fusion Cuticle Oil. I buy multiple from In the Name of Polish at a time lmao

Q: If you were to start an indie line of polish what would you name it and what would the first collection be inspired by?
A: Killa Polish probably. I’ve toyed with the idea just havent commited lmao and it would probably be a little mommy and me collection to be honest. For example. Mommys color would be a deep dark red while baby girls is a soft innocent pink. Lmao i dont know!

FYI…I love the unique idea of a mommy and me nail polish line, it’s just what my daughters and I need. BTW…just in case you were curious as to how to pronounce her name, it’s Kay-lee-nuh…lol and it’s one you’ll want to remember because you will be seeing a lot of her and her beautiful swatches. I hope you enjoyed getting to know Kaylyna and will join me back on the 2nd Friday of next month when I’ll feature a new swatcher/blogger. If you or someone you know deserves the spotlight on them, please feel free to leave their name in the comments or contact me on IG, FB or email.

Special Edition Interview: Robin Moses

(Shouting) “I interrupt this regularly scheduled program to bring you a special announcement!!!” Originally, I was going to post about some of the nail mail I received this month but instead I have an extra treat. I have none other than the world-renowned, extraordinarily talented… ROBIN MOSES!!!

I’m such a fan of Robin and her work ever since someone introduced me to her YouTube channel 2 years ago. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (her upload days) I tune in for uninterrupted #robintime…even hubby and the kids know not to bother me😂. I watch the new video(s) and catch up on the older ones. I love the tutorials but more than that, I love keeping up with Compassionista, Evil Client, Nameless and Juicy just to name a few. All the laughs and good times and I feel like I’m right there hanging out with friends.

“Hello Everyone, I would like to thank Krystal for giving me an opportunity to do an interview! I haven’t done one in a while and so I hope I can give you something fun to read that you didn’t already know! My love and respect to everyone in our community who is sharing, practicing and finding joy in nail art, I am honored and very excited….so, let’s get started!”

Q: Age:
A: I am old, but still feel like a noob at life of the time.

Q: Location:
A: I started my nail art career in Vegas, where I was born. I moved to the Oregon coast and started my salon to give my kids a calmer and more stable life. Vegas life as a child is insanity.

Q: Kids? If so, how many?
A: I have 2 children. A girl and a boy. I must also say that I have a handful of adopted children who have called my casa their home.

Q: Pets? If so, types and how many?
A: I have 4 dogs. I just got two new puppies. They are on my Facebook and Instagram, but I don’t have any uploaded to this computer at the time. 😀 Their names are Lilly, Sigmund, Carl and Nikola.

Q: Tea or Coffee?
A: COFFEE!!!!!! (fun fact) My client, Mammy is my barista. She has a shoppe and I get a coffee from her every morning. quad iced latte with almond milk only. (scary) LOL

Q: Beach or Mountains?
A: I am lucky enough to live in both. I live in Oregon and on the coast so I am right on the beach and also in the mountains. When I first moved here, my goal was to live ON the ocean or in a tree house in the woods. I tried both and realized it is extremely hard to do either. The wind here is super cold and it takes forever to cook on a wood burning stove.

Q: Jeans or Dress?
A: Doesn’t matter, just have to be comfortable!!!

Q: Best gift received?
A: I find it very hard to receive gifts. I don’t know why. But when I was young, a doll I had was lost in a fire and one of my viewers and I were talking about it. She had one and sent it to me. I have it locked away in my art room and I am going to make it into a piece of art someday. Just thinking about it makes me happy because I didn’t have a lot of stuff growing up. It was a very strange coincidence and also the most amazingly magical experience.

Q: Favorite pastime (besides nails)?
A: I love to walk. MOVIES!!!!! I love to listen to music and find new music and listen to lyrics. I love playing with my dogs and I am experimenting with cooking now. I just bought a mixer that grinds things. So I want to learn to make vegetarian burgers and weird stuff like that. I’m not a vegetarian but wish to be someday! I love reading. I used to read so much more, but since YouTube, it has dropped off. Reading is truly an escape for me. It is something that has sustained my art and imagination for my entire life.

Q: Favorite Food?
A: For those who don’t know, I have lost over 210lbs. and kept it off for ten years by walking and eating somewhat healthy, but mostly through walking every. single. day. My favorite food right now that is healthy is greens cooked with garlic and hot sauce. My guilty pleasure favorite food………anything ice cream with a core in it. haha! (shout out to fellow core addicts)

Q: Favorite Movie?
A: I need to name more than one. Holy Mountain by Alejandro Jodorowski is up there, Amelie, Friday, New Jack City, straight out of Compton (huge F. Gary Gray fan), The Princess Bride, The Godfather II, Goodfellas, Any movie you have seen me do on nails also. horror, horror, horror, I love horror films from the 80’s and Japanese Horror, Strange and eclectic films like “upsteam color” things like that….I will not paint a movie theme on nails I do not like (at least the idea of) myself. I have to like the premise.

Q: Favorite Season?
A: Autumn. Hands Down. layerssss baby!!!!!

Q: What cartoon character best represents you?
A: Emily Prime (world of tomorrow)

Q: Night on the town with friends or evening alone at home?
A: I am a hermit. I don’t go out hardly at all. It is something my friends beg me to do more and something I wish I could do more myself, but I get overwhelmed. I need to be in very quiet surroundings a lot of the time. I can go out for the night but after, I have to stay home and just be still and silent. I put in earplugs or music and get centered again. I love my friends and going out and it’s a fear I hope to conquer better in my life and the reason you guys don’t see me out much compared to other gurus.

Q: If you were an animal, what would it be and why?
A: A raccoon. I love shiny things and I am catlike, but not quite a cat….I like the night time. I am fiercely protective of anything I love and my friends don’t see me a lot but when they do, they always smile. I have my art room and in it, I have collected tons of things for my paintings…..Its like, I am always on a mission to find things and build from them…PLUS, raccoons get great masks. *wink*

Q: What or who got you started doing nails?
A: I was on a bad path. A dark path. I had no help. I had no one. I was born poor. I was unhealthy. And, by accident I went to tour a nail school with a friend. I saw a woman in the corner painting a nail with a toothpick. A dot daisy. Nail art hadn’t been invented yet outside of taping nails with the metal tapes you see now except they didn’t have the sticky backs they do now! hhahahah I thought to myself “i can do that!” and I joined. I was kicked out 3x and graduated. When I did, all of my instructors applauded. I think they were happy to see me go but also proud that I accomplished graduating! I couldn’t stand them at the time, but looking back………they were truly awesome women.

Q: How many polishes are in your collection?
A: I give away tons of polishes to organizations that help sick children or who help children in general so the number changes but I would say about 800? It gets up there! hahahahahahahaha

Q: What tips or advice would you give an aspiring nail tech/artist?
A: Being real, I would say this. It is hard. It is fiercely competitive in our industry. Be strong. Know your passion and get great at it. If its pedicures, be the best at them. If its natural manis with vegan polish, do YOUR THANG….everyone has enough clients waiting to find you if you are good at what you do. So many techs are late, have drama, have problems they bring to the shop…THEY DON’T LAST……I would love to see more shout outs made to a nail artist just like they do for music artists —to give women who are doing the WORK proper credit….i hope new techs do this, it will save our industry………..I have seen girls fist fight each other over a “stolen” client and/or designs WITHIN a shop, im not talking globally! It should be about joy you create for yourself and your life. A negative stigma is attached to “perfection” in our job as a nail tech…, while crappy overpriced trends are thrown at us and then thrown away—we also do that to each other and no one wins long term…..MOST of us will become a fad if we don’t come together and BE that place women want to escape to……….. To new techs, I say….go to work, be on time, listen, do YOUR best and work on YOUR clientele and have them spread the word about you…..make them feel special for that hour or 2…..or 6 if you are new LOL….it doesnt matter, it is about the experience and if you want it, there is a huge, huge market of people looking to find good techs.

Q: With all the craze around stamping, why have you continued to handpaint your nail art?
A: Because before stamping there was ______and before ______ there was crackle paint and before crackle paint there was ________ and before that there was that….and you said it….”craze”….I KNOW what makes me money to pay my bills and having everyone’s nails exactly the same does NOT pay my bills!!!!! LETS KEEP THAT REAL….. My clients drive 4 hours each way, fly, fly me out to them and have done so for many years ….JUST to have “specialty” nails…….To have that design everyone grabs and when they say its hand painted, men go WHOA THAT IS AWESOME…women get jealous and go silent…..and walk away!!! hahahahh……I have seen it! I don’t pay attention to ‘crazes’ too much…..I do what I do and I do it the best I can and I stay in my own lane. My lane is FUN…… lane is full of surprises, problem solving and laughter. I think of stamping and I think of making license plates……..which some days, I would love to do. I am in no way putting down stamping. I know some are so lovely, but………That is the true reason why I hand paint…I love it, it loves me and its REAL. it’s imperfectly perfect. its modern art on human flesh…its badass.

Q: Who gave your clients their awesome aliases?
A: We did together. Evil client; because she is the nicest person I know. Mammy because her grandkids call her that, Juicy because that is truly who she is through and through LOL, etc. It was to protect them in case anyone watched my videos at first. Now, they don’t care so much. 😀

Q: If you weren’t the wonderfully, talented Robin Moses Nail Artist Extraordinaire, what would you do?
A: As some of you know my daughter is going to be a doctor and that is a true testimony of what Nail Art CAN do for your life…..It makes me tear up to say that because she had opportunities I didn’t because of all of the filing I have done!……If I had been born in a better circumstance, I would have become a plastic surgeon. That was my dream. Particularly for children who were born with facial deformities or were in accidents; focusing on facial reconstruction surgeries. I also see myself teaching art to women in prison who are serving life sentences for either violent crime and/or who are mentally ill. My mother was mentally ill and I have spent lots of time teaching in my life….I need more time to get a full answer on this question but I also see myself teaching and studying in India.

Q: Besides 2 Chainz and Snoop, who else’s nails would you like to do if you had a chance?
A: Tori Amos, Ilanya Vanzant, Oprah, Serena and Venus Williams, Michelle Obama, DMX, chuck palanuik, rihanna, im feelin’ amber rose lately, id like to do her nails, oh man….toooooo many to name!!! It is my goal to do as many people’s nails that I love as I can in my lifetime.

Q: Do you ever find time to do your own nails?
A: Nope. never. I have no interest in wearing nails or doing my own. I DO do my own pedicures and my toes are ON POINT 24/7 365. hahahahhaah i am SERIOUS about that.

Q: If your client doesn’t have any special requests, where do you find inspiration for the nail art?
A: When you walk in nature….or in a neighborhood….and you are calm and your mind is still…… can feel the colors and the trends in the air. in the windows, in the magazines, in the season……….its everywhere. the colors of polish at rite aid, the color of lipsticks on the models…you FEEL it…then, you just let it cook in your mind…….i have a book I keep with me in my pocket at all times….you asked above: jeans or dress: EITHER if they have a pocket!! haha….AND I DRAW….it makes no sense to anyone but me, but it does…its a feeling. i will write a color. I mix that color….I mix and I mix………… goal is to have a line of colors unlike ANYTHING you have ever seen…..just you wait Krystal, I believe I can do this!!!! I havent had many opportunities because I don’t “play the game” but I know MY opportunities will come with time. I will do as much good with them as I can to help as many as I can.

halo robin
Q: Do you have a favorite nail art design or playlist that you’ve done to date?
A: HERE is a fun fact. NO. I don’t have a favorite (im getting choked up)…………I call all my designs:”girls”….some girls i LOVE…some I like….some I don’t like and everyone else does and i dont understand so i paint her anyway………..but I have “mother” designs and “grandmother” designs that I have been doing for 27 years. To me, they are the bread and butter of my children’s lives…I thank them like they are real people….like “blood splatters, or drip nails” that everyone copied and didn’t give me credit for, that was a grandmother design….I have had her near me my entire adult life and remember the day I thought of her over 25 years ago………… see her out there (even though i didn’t get credit for starting it) is like seeing my grandma everywhere and she is alive and she is so beautiful… me, it is like she got famous and got her dream life!!!!! …..and to me, that is so beautiful……i dont care about ‘credit’ but it would have been so nice to get it……… know? but i just see some of my beginner nail designs that are the TRUE beginnings of nail art as you guys know it, and i know where it came from and what i was thinking when i made it….to me, that is a huge gift…..maybe its a bigger, special and personal gift than that doll im saving? it’s an abstract gift.

Q: Other than OPIs Put It In Neutral, do you have any polishes that you use more often than others?
A: I don’t prefer put it in neutral, just to be honest….Its just best ‘right now’………my favorite bitches (my polishes that are ride or die) are Wet n’ Wild black and white….and Wet n’ Wild topcoat as a thinner for when polish gets thick or if I have to mix a special polish color. I have others that are discontinued that i use off camera that I bought in bulk when they discontinued
