Moore News You Can Use: Summertime Skincare

For most of us, summer is in full swing which means lots of sun all day long! As you enjoy the outdoors with your friends and family, it’s so important to remember to protect your skin from sun damage. Yes, we all know that it’s really important for our face and body — but don’t neglect your hands too! This article from StyleCaster points out that our hands are a huge age giveaway. Arms are very important too: those who drive on a regular basis are exposed to substantially more sun on the left side of the body, making the left arm, neck, and face more susceptible to certain skin cancers.

The team at suggests looking for a sunscreen with these features…

  • Choose at least SPF 30. Meaning that the sunscreen will prevent you from burning 30 times longer than going without protection. For example, if you would normally burn after 10 minutes in the sun, SPF 30 sunscreen will protect you 30 times longer, or for 300 minutes total. Be sure the formula protects against UVA and UVB rays as well, for both surface-level and deep damage.
  • Opt out of powders and sprays. Most people do not use as much sunscreen as needed on their body and face, resulting in inadequate coverage. Sprays are designed for convenient coverage, but as it turns out, much of what is sprayed ends up in the air and not on the skin. Powders fall in the same boat, and are very hard to rub into the skin.
  • Avoid controversial ingredients like Oxybenzone, Octinoxate, and Retinyl palmitate. Oxybenzone and Octinoxate have elevated levels of allergic reactions, while Retinyl palmitate has been investigated as an agent that may actually speed the development of malignant cells.

Remember that safety against the aging and damaging effects of the sun relies on the proper application of a sufficient amount. Don’t neglect your ears, the tops of your feet, and your hands for full coverage! For those looking for extra protection, wearing a hat and long sleeves in the sun is another good way to avoid harmful rays.
