Up Close & Personal with Michelle Neasbitt of Polish ‘M

 Michelle Neasbitt

Bakersfield, CA

Birthday 11/23

If you could be from anywhere, where would it be and why?

I have no idea lol. I have been a very satisfied California girl!

What 2 things would you rate 10/10?

The Keto Diet and Unite hair products

What could you give a 49 minute presentation on with absolutely no preparation?

The statistics of shelter animals, specifically Pit Bulls and the importance of spaying/neutering your pets.

Favorite food?

Describe yourself in 5 words

Stubborn, Tight wound, Independent, Determined, Level-Headed

What are your top 3 favorite things to do? (Outside of making polish and filling orders…lol)

Fostering dogs, Girl time with my friends, Traveling with my husband.

When and why did you decide to start a nail polish line?

I have been a manicurist for 23 years. In the early to mid 90’s there wasn’t a lot of polish shades to choose from. I use to “franken” my own colors to suit my clients needs. I had no idea what it even was then, other than mixing colors. In 2011, when I ran across my first “indie”, I knew I wanted to buy glitter and make my own polish. I played around for about a year and launched in August of 2012.

What makes your brand different?

I feel like I march to the beat of my own drum. I don’t really follow “trends”. I’m not one to conform or live in a restricted bubble, even if that means less sales. I didn’t jump on the holo or multichrome craze. I feel like jumping on the trends limits my creativity. I do my own thing.

What is one thing you’re willing to share that your customers would be surprised to know about you?

I knew at a very young age I never wanted kids. I’m 41 yrs old and have absolutely zero regrets. I am proudly childfree!!

What advice/tips/best practices would you give someone wanting to start their own polish company?

This market is so extremely saturated. I would say do not go into it thinking you are going to make any real money. DO YOUR RESEARCH!!! Test your glitters and pigments!!

Besides your own, what other brands do you own/wear?

I have only worn gel polish on my nails for the last 5 years. I do paint my toes! I love anything from Cameo Colours!

What is one of you favorite collections or polishes you created?

Anything from Fall.

How did you come up with your company name and logo?

I started as Laquerlicious but I wanted something more personal. The M is for Michelle, obviously lol. The logo was created with a designer friend. I wanted simple but classy. I think the border and bow is super cute and simple.

If you weren’t in the indie polish business, what’s another product you would have liked to create?

Hair products.

Any spoilers that you care to share about future collections, products, etc?

Halloween thermals are coming!! These will be my very first thermals!

What do you love most about being an indie polish maker?

The relationships I have developed along the way with customers, other makers and swatchers/bloggers. I have made some of my very closest friends because of this industry!

What other brand (just 1) would you like to collaborate with?

Any brand! I LOVE collabs! I have done a ton along the way and I ALWAYS welcome more!

Favorite nail art technique?

I say anything goes! I don’t have a favorite honestly.

What is your greatest accomplishment to date with your brand?

That I have made it to 5 years! And my Polish for Pit Bulls line!

What is one challenge you’ve faced in business and how did you overcome it?

I would say lack of space for all my materials and shipping supplies. I took over an entire bedroom in our house and that helped but I could still use another room!
