Interview: Mardi Carruth of The Howling Boutique

Welcome back! As promised, I am here today with a very special women, maker and creator, Mardi Carruth of The Howling Boutique. *insert applause here* I had the absolute pleasure of swatching Mardi’s 3rd collection, The Chosen Collection and if you didn’t get a chance to read the my review, be sure you do here. I knew then, that she was someone who had to come back and give the people what the need, an Indie Maker Interview. It’s evident from her line of jewelry AND polish that she is talented, detail oriented and creative.

So without further ado, please give a loud howl…I mean warm welcome to Mardi Carruth!!

Name: Mardi Carruth
Location: North Richland Hills, Texas
Birthday: March 8th

What was the last thing that made you laugh out loud? When was it?
Oh man. I honestly don’t remember anything specific but it was more than likely something my mom and/or dad said. We’re pretty hilarious.

Stranded on a desert island, what 5 things would you must have?
A fold-out cot, lighter fuel, first aid kit, water purifier, and a large hunting knife.

What cartoon character best represents you?
Daria from Daria.

Relaxing soak in a bubble bath or hot, steamy shower?
Neither! LOL. I’m not a bath type of person and hot showers really irritate my skin. I’d definitely go for a mildly warm shower, though!

Favorite 90s TV show or artist/song?
My favorite show was probably Buffy the Vampire Slayer and my favorite artist was definitely Nsync (even though both of them appeared in the late ‘90s).

If you were an animal, what would it be and why?
Oh. Easy. A wolf for sure! I’ve been obsessed with them every since I was little. I have a framed photo of timber wolves above my bed that my parents bought me in 1993 when I was only 8 years old. They’re just such gorgeous, magnificent creatures and I really love the dynamics of their pack – their family. They’re one of the few species that will adopt orphaned pups that aren’t their own where a lot of other animals, like bears and lions, would kill them. Wolves are amazing.

Best gift received? Best gift given?
The best gift I ever got was probably from my dad in 2004 or 2005. We went to New York City for my high school graduation present (I graduated in 2003) and during one of our site-seeing ventures, visited this HUGE Toys R Us. While inside, I discovered a display of My Little Ponies. As a kid, I was OBSESSED with them and had no idea that they had ‘come back’. So my dad bought me two of them and it more or less rekindled said obsession and now I have close to 400 of the darn things!

When and why did you decide to start a nail polish line and what makes your brand different?
I started making nail polish back in 2012 with the intent to ONLY make it for jewelry – as a medium to paint glass cabochons with. While there were (and still are) lots of people who make nail polish jewelry, no one was making the polish themselves for the sole purpose of using it for the jewelry. So I became the first person to do that! Almost immediately after I opened my shop on Etsy in late 2013, people would ask me if I intended to make/sell the nail polish itself. At first, I didn’t want to, but after awhile the idea grew on me and so I began reformulating and branching out from just glitter polishes to try and see if it was something worth doing. And it was! I think the fact that I started off just doing jewelry, and that I don’t really even wear nail polish myself, definitely sets me apart from other brands and makers.

What is one thing you’re willing to share that your customers would be surprised to know about you?
A super random, personal tidbit is that my cousin is Morris Day from The Time (my mom is his aunt).

What advice/tips/best practices would you give someone wanting to start their own polish company?
Do your research!! In the end, it’s SO much more satisfying knowing that you’ve done the majority of the leg work yourself versus getting all the answers by asking other people who did the research themselves. Sure, you’re going to have questions, but try and find out the information first before approaching someone. Not only will it make you feel good, but other people will notice that you’ve done your research first and it will definitely get you some positive ‘points’ before you’ve even launched! Also – testing! So much testing! Like. MONTHS or more of testing!

Besides your own, what other brands do you own/wear?
I don’t really wear nail polish (shocking, I know) but I still try to buy other indie brands, especially when I’m friends with the maker, as a way of showing support for them and the community in general. I only have 19 polishes right now from Anchor & Heart Lacquer, Baroness X, Frenzy Polish, Great Lakes Lacquer, Stached Polish, Supernatural Lacquer, and Sweet & Sour Lacquer.

Describe yourself in 5 words
Sarcastic, Ramble-y, Creative, Empathetic, and Passionate.

What is one of your favorite collections or polishes you created?
Well I’ve only done three collections plus a duo so far, but I think my favorite release is still my first collection. Out of those, Mystic Mountain has got to be my overall favorite.

What are your top 3 favorite things to do? (Outside of making polish and filling orders…lol)
I love to write, watch ‘my’ TV shows, and organize.

How did you come up with your company name and logo?
Well, I really wanted to incorporate wolves into my brand name somehow and after a ton of brainstorming, The Howling Boutique was born. Even though I started off doing jewelry, I knew that I eventually would want to branch out into makeup, which is why I went with Boutique. When I decided to do nail polish, I wanted to make sure that it went well and followed the same sort of theme, so doing something moon related was a given and that’s how I got Supermoon Lacquer.

If you weren’t in the indie polish business, what’s another product you would have liked to create?
Jewelry! LOL. Which I already do. Probably eye shadow? I’d eventually like to explore that avenue as well.

Any spoilers that you care to share about future collections, products, etc?
Well I’m currently working on my first two collections for 2017. As far as any specifics go, I really like to share ‘behind-the-scenes’ stuff with my Facebook group so you should definitely join that for spoilers!

In 10 words or less, what would be your brand slogan?
I already sort of have two: “Unique. Vibrant. Wild.” and “Individually Designed. Always Handmade.”

What do you love most about being an indie polish maker?
Aside from the obvious stuff like creating the polishes and getting to experiment with various ingredients, I really love meeting new people! Whether it’s a customer who’s made a purchase (or several), another indie maker, bloggers/swatchers, or just other people in the community who have no idea who me and my brand is. I’ve made a lot of good friends and met a ton of awesome people and I love it!

What other brand (just 1) would you like to collaborate with or have already collaborated with?
Well I JUST did my first collab. at the beginning of November with Stashed Polish, Sweet & Sour Lacquer, and Lilly Anne’s Garden. I’d love to be able to do a future collab with Supernatural Lacquer! I think it’d be suh-WEET.

Favorite nail art technique?
Hm. I don’t do any nail art personally, so really, everything amazes me but I think the people who are able to free hand pictures on their nails are just. RIDICULOUS.

What is your greatest accomplishment to date with your brand?
Well my ‘overall’ brand – The Howling Boutique – just celebrated its 3 year anniversary on October 12th, 2016! I think that’s amazing!!

*SHOUTING* Someone get Stephanie Sanders on the phone, we need to get this duo in the works immediately!!! (I’m making it my mission to bring indie brands together for the betterment of the world and ultimate polish domination…lol!) No, seriously though, I’d love to see these two ladies work together.

What an amazing way to end November. Thanks, again, to Mardi for stopping by and we look forward to what you have planned for 2017! See you in December!

December Monthly Awareness Polish Box: M.A.D.D.

***PRESS (PR) SAMPLE NOTICE: This post contains polishes that were sent to me for free from the company/brand in exchange for an honest review. All opinions stated are my own and based on my experiences. For additional info regarding PR samples, click here ***

Another month, another box, another worthy cause. Last month’s Awareness Polish Box focused on Lung Cancer, this month…we are M.A.D.D. (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). I remember that first time I heard of M.A.D.D., it was 1999-2000 and I was a junior in HS. Right before prom, they had all the juniors and seniors come outside to the front of the school where a car crash had been staged to show the life changing and damaging effects drinking and driving could have on ones life. Not just those involved but the family and friends too. Now mind you, in HS we were not of legal drinking age, but the message was, and still is, extremely important, DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE! Or, for that matter, get in the car with someone who has been drinking.

FACT: “Every day in America, another 27 people die as a result of drunk driving crashes” MADD.org

As I continued to read and research more about M.A.D.D. the madder I got, but then I remembered that knowledge is power. So, my plea and call for action from todays post is that we unite together and stand firm that we are M.A.D.D.!!!

FACT: “Over 1.1 million drivers were arrested in 2014 for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics.” MADD.org

FACT: “In the United States, the number of drunk driving deaths has been cut in half since MADD was founded in 1980.” MADD.org

The facts are alarming but we don’t have to stand for it any longer. Every month the Month Awareness Polish Box will donate 10% of each box to a specific charity or cause, this month proceeds are going to M.A.D.D. Orders for this box will start Saturday, Nov.26th thru Dec. 5th and start shipping will begin mid month. At this time international orders will not be accepted but that may change in the future.

December’s Makers and Brands features:

  • Lindsay Johns of Night Owl Lacquer
  • Hillary Wilson of Nail Jewelry Bling
  • Carrie Lynn of Darling Diva
  • Virginia Shaw of Pretty Beautiful
  • Victoria Greathouse of Blush Lacquers
  • Anetress Malone of Dainty Digits

**All swatches are done using Commitment Issue Peel-off Base Coat by Vapid and Topped with Love by Love, Angeline (shiny) and Matte Me by Jior Couture (matte). Swatch photos are taken using artificial lights.**

Interview: Morgan Langley of Sweetpea Polish

Good morning y’all! Have I told y’all how much I loooooove doing Indie Maker Interviews? No? Well I do! Why? Because I really feel like I get a better understanding of the brand AND maker on both a personal and professional level. Plus, I’m a very curious person by nature….ok, ok, I’m nosey…lol, but curious sounds better! As I continue on my blog journey, many segments may come and go but interviews, both Swatcher Spotlight and Indie Maker, will be around for a while….oooooorrrrr at least until I get all the willing indie makers/brands to participate…lol! When I send out the questions to the makers and prepare the blog to go live, I imagine that I am sitting on a stage, like on a talk show and all the readers who stop by (you), are the live studio audience. So now that I have painted the scene, I want you to picture it too.

Queue theme music….and in 5…4…3…2 anndddd action!

This collection will feature 4 polishes inspired by Disney and it’s, “…dedicated to the inner princess in you!”

 Minnie Me Pretty

Minnie Me Pretty is a delicate, light, baby pink jelly packed with silver shimmer, hex glitters in various shapes and shades of pink and white and Minnie shaped glitters.

 Overall Thoughts

Formula: ♥♥♥ 3 out of 5. Apply thin coats.

Application: ♥♥♥ 3 out of 5 because you do have to fish out the heavier Minnie glitters and apply with thin, even layers.

Opaqueness: ♥♥ 2 out of 5 because while I love a good shimmer polish, I don’t like sheer polishes. I don’t like be able to see my nail line so I’d have to recommend a base, preferable white or pink.

Overall: ♥♥♥ 3 out of 5 because I do love its uniqueness and the budget-friendly price.

The 4 polishes will only be sold as a set for $25 and will be releasing Black Friday, Nov. 25th.

12 Days of Polish: le Polish – On This Day

***PRESS (PR) SAMPLE NOTICE: This post contains polishes that were sent to me for free from the company/brand in exchange for an honest review. All opinions stated are my own and based on my experiences. For additional info regarding PR samples, click here ***

Sung to the tune of “12 Days of Christmas”
On The Fifth Day of Polish, My True Love Gave to Me;
On This Day, a royal blue jelly.

Hey y’all, I’m back with another polish from le Polish. However, this time, things were done a little differently with this collection. What do you get when you add an amazing maker and 12 bloggers? The answer…12 Days of Polish!!! Instead of group members and fans submitting an inspiration photo and voting or Allison choosing a Winter/Holiday based inspiration, Allison chose to go the route less travelled.

“Honestly it was sort of a round about thought process. Last year I did a 12 Days of Christmas sale, where I had a different sale every day, but that was a real pain to keep up with. So I kind of had this idea and I thought it’d be a good opportunity for me to get to know some bloggers better.”

Each blogger submitted a winter/holiday inspired photo to Allison who then created 12 beautiful polishes. This was such an amazing opportunity to be selected amongst this group of bloggers and I’m so excited and honored to be a part of this project. But before I jump into the polish let me give you a little background on the inspiration for my Holiday/Winter inspired polish.

February in Maryland is the epitome of winter and what better holiday to celebrate love than Valentine’s Days?! Jason and I married on Valentine’s Day 2014 and it was by far one the best days of my life. But the day did not start off without its fair share of…CRAZY!!! Imagine waking up the day before your wedding, fielding calls, text messages and facebook messages asking, “are you still getting married tomorrow?” “Is the wedding still on?” Not because of ‘cold feet’, in the traditional sense, but because the governor had issued a State of Emergency Declaration just 2 days before. Yes, on Feb. 11th, Maryland residents were preparing for what was the largest snowfall of the season. The snow fell and fell and fell and I was a wreck yet I was adamant on getting married on Valentine’s Day. Luckily, thanks to family, friends and neighbors, Jason and I wed.

The day was perfect and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I said ‘I do’ to my amazing husband in front of God and a small gathering of family and friends. Our colors were Horizon blue, white and silver…you guessed it, Dallas Cowboys colors. Why? Because my hubby is a die hard fan! That was for him and the only thing I asked for was that we write our own vows….they started with,

On this day….

**All swatches are done using Commitment Issue Peel-off Base Coat by Vapid and Topped with Love by Love, Angeline. Swatch photos are taken using artificial lights.**

On This Day is a royal blue jelly with lots of silver and gray shimmer and glitter.

I may be a bit bias, but this is by far the pretties blue I’ve seen! So here’s how you can score yourself a bottle of On This Day and the other polishes in the 12 Days of Polish Collection.

Releasing: 12am est on Black Friday Nov. 25th

Cost: $10/bottle (only available in full size (15ml) only)

Overall Thoughts

Formula: ♥♥♥♥♥ 5 out of 5 of their ideal formula and great consistency. No issues to report.

Application: ♥♥♥♥♥ 5 out of 5 because of the great formula(s) on these polishes, the application was super easy to apply and work with. No fishing for add-in i.e glitters, flakies, etc,

Opaqueness: ♥♥♥♥♥ 5 out of 5 because these polishes are opaque in 2-3 coats. The glitters did not require sponge application because the are dense and packed enough to be opaque with regular application.

Price: $$

Overall: ♥♥♥♥♥ this collection is getting a 5 out of 5 from me based on the 4 of the 12 polishes I reviewed. I love the names of these polishes and how well the looked shiny, matte or with nail art.

The Winter Collection releases TODAY, Monday, Nov. 14th and polishes will prices accordingly: Crellies $8.50, Glitters $8.50, Dusty Cremes: $7.50 and Multi-Chromes: $9. Special Edition Interview: Jason Moore

You may be sitting there like who is Jason Moore? So let me address that right now. He is my best friend, my amazing, better half, simply put, he’s my husband. If you’re a reader of my blog, a friend on Facebook or a follower on Insagram, them I’m sure you’ve read or seen his name or nails along the way. During my journey of doing my own natural nails at home vs going to a salon and now getting into blogging, my husband has supported and encouraged me and even been the test dummy for many new, but failed nail techniques trials.

Seeing as though November marks my 2 year anniversary of #nomoresalons, I thought it only befitting to Spotlight my one and only. Please help me give him a warm welcome!!

Name: Jason Moore
Location: Frederick, MD
Birthday: July 29

As you may have imagined, I couldn’t ask him the same type of questions that I’d ask a Swatcher/blogger but I’m sure you’ll find the answers to what I did ask, funny and interesting. Here’s goes nothing…

Q: Name 5 indie brands I own
A: The Parrot one, Anonymous Lacquer, Vapid and Toxic

Q: Do you mean Tonic?
A: Yes, the ones by Lindsey
Hahaha, I have many, many more than that but he could only name 4. I’m schocked he remembered that many.

Q: To date, how much money have I spend on nail polish?
A: $567.32
I’m not sure how he came up with that number but I can tell you it’s a lot more than that since I’ve been purchasing indies since April of last year! Shhhhh, that will be our little secret.

Q: What 3 things have you learned since I started doing my own nails?
A: 1) similar does not mean the same, 2) everybody has a cuticle (or at least they should) and 3) there is a difference between indie, mainstream/drugstore and salon.

Q: What is the worst part of my nail polish addiction?
A: The fumes
Note to self, get a fan or open a window. I didn’t realize the fumes were that bad because I’m so use to it.

Q: What was the last blog post you read of mine?
A: Indie Maker Interview on Vernita Goodson

Q: What one piece of would you give to other husbands/boyfriends?
A: Just say yes!

Q: Name 3 Polish finishes
A: matte, shimmer and holo
I was very impressed with his answer for that question.

Q: Roughly, how many polishes do I own?
A: 350
I literally lol’d at this answer. Glad he doesn’t count. Or care for that matter.

Q: What color/finish/type of polish do you prefer me to wear?
A: matte, holo, Neon

Q: Name 5 nail art techniques
A: the water thing (watermarble), the sponge thing (gradient), stamping, free hand and the sticker things you hate (vinyls).

This has to be the best interview I’ve done to date! I had such a good time laying in bed asking him these questions. And I must say, I am in awe at some of his answers…I never knew he paid so much attention when I talk about polish. Trust me when I tell you, that these answers are his and his alone. I love him so much for participating in this interview for me. Do you all see why I love home so much?

That does it for today everyone. Thanks for joining me here and I hope you come back next time. Have a great weekend!
