Born in the 80s, growing up a young girl meant one thing, Lisa Frank! Lisa Frank dominated as the queen of bright, rainbows, neon dolphins, puppies and stickers. This women puts the ‘V’ in my DMV and I can only be talking about the one and only Vernita Goodson. We are capping off September’s Indie Maker Interviews with Vernita so we can get the behind the scenes scoop on her and her brand.

“The Story of le polish

Hi awesome polish lovers!  After loving, buying, and wearing indie polish for so long, I wanted to take the next step.  I bought some supplies and played around with mixing up some polish.  As it turns out, I love the creative process and thus, le polish was born. Since this project is my creative baby, it was only logical that I name my brand after my real babies, the loves of my life, my sons – Lukas and Erik.

Every polish I make is hand-crafted with care and I hope you love my creations as much as I love making them!

Overall, I think Vapid scored a 5 out of 5 with this collection. Gorgeous selection of colors, excellent formulas, easy application, great coverage and opacity. By the way, did you notice the new labels? They make it easier to see all the gorgeousness inside. I purposely swacthed Fire Starter last because I wanted to wear it for a few days and I got so many compliments from the moms at gymnastics. I was literally stopped and asked what brand I was wearing. VAPID!!! That was my opportunity to explain indies…imagine, having never heard of indie polish 🙂 I’m not sure if she’ll buy or not but she loved the color and even invited her hubby over to take a look who really didn’t see the gorgeousness that is Fire Starter but most don’t….hahaha.

Interview: Chelsea McDonnel of Pretty & Polished

Welcome back everyone! You’re just in time for yet another installment of Indie Maker Interview. As always, on the 3rd and 4th Wednesday of the month, I bring you inside and in depth with the makers, scratch that, wizards behind some of our favorite brands. I love todays featured maker and was super thrilled when she agreed to participate in this series. I’m going to give you 3 clues to see if you can guess who this marvelous maker is. Clue #1, before I started blogging, I swatched and posted my photos to IG. One of the collections that I swatched was the Icon Collection from this brand and let me just say,  clue #2, she is the queen of thermal polishes. Clue #3, she was even nice enough to help sponsor my upcoming 5k IG giveway. Still not sure who I am referring to? Then allow me to present, Chelsea McDonnel of Pretty & Polished (P&P).

Pretty & Polished is a small, family owned company based out of the Midwest in a lovely Indiana college town which started in early 2011 as a nail polish brand but quickly turned into a way of life. They remain active in local charities and also reach out to charities and causes away from home. P&P feel the need to give back to a world that has been so good to them and feel very strongly about keeping their products completely vegan and animal friendly.

Chlesea with a couple boxes of Cancer Care Packages, “we sell charity polishes to fund this project, we make care packages and deliver them to local cancer patients.”

Name Chelsea McDonnel
Location Muncie, IN
Birthday April 24

Q: Favorite season and why?
A: Fall is the best time of the year. I love the Indiana weather, the gorgeous fall colors, the smells, the food. Fall is when I get to do most of our favorite outdoor activities with my kids. These are the things that stick in your mind forever.

Q: Favorite meal of the day?
A: Dinner. Its the only meal of the day that my whole family gets to sit together. When you have 3 kids and everyone is busy things like sitting at the table become incredibly meaningful.

Q: What cartoon character best represents you?
A: Linda Belcher (she’s the mom from Bob’s Burgers). My husband always says this about me. He says I’m hilarious, a good mom, a loving wife, and I make up hilarious songs and am not afraid to be funny regardless of who’s around. I also embarrass my children often.

Q: Night on the town with friends or evening alone at home?
A: That’s a tough one. I don’t get a lot of time with my friends or alone time. I’d probably choose time with friends though because I’m very social.

Q: Jeans or Dress?
A: Love dresses but I wear jeans 90% of the time.

Q: If you were an animal, what would it be and why?
A: An elephant. Elephants love hard. They are faithful and protective. Definitely my spirit animal.

Q: Read a book or watch a movie?
A: Read! I love books. I’ve read thousands.

Q: Why did you decide to start a nail polish line and what makes your brand different?
A: Back in late 2010 and early 2011 I became really good at finding nail polishes that were hard to find and getting them into the hands of other polish lovers who wanted them. It was then that I realized how much I enjoyed giving something as special as beautiful polish to others and wanted to make it a big part of my life.

Q: What makes P&P different?
A: Well, I know we have been making polish longer than most of the other makers (who are still around) at this point but I don’t necessarily think that makes us special. Maybe more experienced. But what I think makes us different and special is our unwavering originality. We make polishes that we like. We don’t feel the need to hop on every trend or copy others. We make shades that speak to us in hopes that it will speak to our customers.

Q: What is one thing you’re willing to share that your customers would be surprised to know about you?
A: I’ve been really open with our customers over the years and have formed many friendships so I don’t know what there is left for them to know about me. I guess it may come as a shock to some that I have over a quarter of my body tattooed.

Q: What advice/tips would you give someone wanting to start their own polish company?
A: I would tell them to be patient and don’t get discouraged. The Indie Polish community has become very saturated with new brands and sometimes they don’t last for long. I think if you get into this business to make a quick buck and in hopes of getting “indie polish famous” overnight you are in the wrong business. As with any new business venture you have to work hard, work smart, and be patient. I hate seeing people get discouraged. There is enough room for all of us, and if we worked together more it may just make it easier.

Q: Besides your own, what other brands do you own/wear?
A: I have a good mix of Indie brands. I think the ones I own the most of are probably KBShimmer, Lush Lacquer, and Gunpowder Lacquer. I honestly don’t wear a ton of nail polish these days unless it’s something of ours. It has been a great way to advertise.

Q: In 5 words, describe yourself
A: It’s not five words but it’s how a lot of people have described me. Make it work with what you have. It’s how I’ve had to live my life.

Q: What is one your strengths? Weakness?
A: I’ve always felt that my ability to FEEL is one of my biggest strengths and weaknesses. I can make an emotional attachment to almost anything. It helps me stay humble but also find beauty in many things which really helps my creativity. But it also means I get hurt very easily.

Q: What are your top 3 favorite things to do? (Outside of making polish and filling orders…lol)
A: I am actually a really active person. I love running and working out. I enjoy cooking and am actually working on a cookbook. And I love designing all kinds of things. I have a very imaginative artistic side that is hard to contain.

This past weekend was the inaugural launch of Polish Con in Chicago and upon the many brands in attendance, Pretty & Polished was there. I saw all over Facebook how awesome it was so see and meet Chelsea. Mariah from Great Lakes Lacquer described Chelsea as, “…a powerhouse in person.” She went on to say, “…an aura that radiates 10 feet around that exudes strength and beauty all combined in one.” For those of us there were no able to make it, I hope this interview brought you a little closer to her and Pretty & Polished.

Nail Mail: September

***THIS POST CONTAINS POLISHES THAT WERE PURCHASED WITH A BLOGGER DISCOUNT***

Hey ya’ll, it’s finally Friday! I went buckwild this month and we only halfway through. However, I am putting myself on a loooow buy after September because holiday shopping will be here before you know it and shopping for 3 kids is brutal. This won’t stop my monthly nail mail posts, oh no, I’ll still be making purchases. But back to the reason that brought you all here…#NAILMAIL!!!

I’ve bought some killer polishes, if I do say so myself and I’m ecstatic to show you all. If you haven’t seen my nail mail from August, be sure to check it out here.

Today I have:

  • Fall/Winter 2016 Collection by In The Name of Polish
  • Midnight Mayhem (Sept GPF Group Custom), Vampire Breath and Night of the Living Dummy from the It’s Gonna Be A Scream  Collection by Glam Polish
  • Dragon Heartstring from the Ollivander Wanderlore Collection by Nvr Enuff
  • Summer Shenanigans and Dark Twisted Fantasies by Vapid

Let’s get started, shall we?

Fall/Winter 2016 Collection
by In The Name of Polish

Pictured l to r: top row – (Crèmes)Wasabi & Mistletoe, Special Brownies, Smashin Pumkins, Baby Sh!t and Sh!ttin Bricks. Bottom row – (Shimmers) Sugar Plum Barry from Accounting, Skinny Jeans Moose Knuckle and Sweet Turtleneck Bro

I apologize in advance for not doing actual swatches of these polishes, time just didn’t permit. If you’d like to see swatches, check out my girl, Kaylyna aka KillaKays_NailAdventure on Instagram or her full S&R on her blog. What I did have time to do was a watermarble using all the crème polishes of this collection. By now, I’m sure you realize how easily INTOP spread in the water making marbling easy and fun.

My mani featured Sugar Plum Barry from Accounting on the index finger, Skinny Jeans Moose Knuckle on the middle finger, Sweet Turtleneck Bro on the pinky and a watermarble of the cremes on the ring/accent finger. This collection is perfect for fall and a must have!!!

Midnight Mayhem (Sept GPF Group Custom), Night of the Living Dummy and Vampire Breath from the It’s Gonna Be A Scream Collection
by Glam Polish

I was trying not to over spend my polish budget so early in the month but lets face it, when Glam has new collections being released AND a phenomenal group custom, the budget goes out the door.

I did show some self restraint and only ordered Midnight Mayhem (Glam Polish Fan) Group Custom, Night of the Living Dummy and Vampire Breath from the new It’s Gonna be a Scream Collection.

Please note, you must be a member of the Glam Polish Fans on Facebook to get this polish. There is a special member code that needs to be entered to reduce the price from $120 to $12.

Overall, I loooove these polishes. The colors are perrrfect. However, they do apply a little thick so I would caution you apply in thin coats and allow plenty of drying time.

Dragon Heartstring
from the Ollivander Wanderlore Collection
by Nvr Enuff

Dragon Heartstring totally pulled on my heartstrings and said ‘buy me, Krystal, buy me,’ and I have learned to go with my gut. I am so happy I did because this polish is truly amazing.

Wanda aka my Cindy/Cinderella hand, decided to make a special guess appearance for this swatch of Dragon Heartstring. Normally, I don’t buy toppers because I’m always worried about what base to use underneath. But when I saw PR sample swatches, I knew this one was a no brainer. Here is Dragon Heartstring over Zoya’s Louise.

Summer Shenanigans & Dark Twisted Fantasies
by Vapid

Just when you thought summer was over, Vapid releases Summer Shenanigans! The magenta and blue drew me in but the orange sealed the deal. I am so happy I decided to get this trio because it’s a limited pour and once sold out they will not come back until 2017.

I did the best I could to use all the colors in 1 mani rather than individual swatches. I like that you can wear the alone or all together.

On the index finger I have Fish Out of Water, a turquoise, jelly like polish with intense copper shimmer.
On the middle finger I have Use Your Noodle, a vibrant orange with gold, large particle shimmer.
I used Round n’ Round on the pinky. It is described as a magenta polish w a beautiful copper shimmer.
The accent finger is a fan brush nail using all the polishes.

I have missed out on a lot of Vapids in the past as I recently became more involved in the indie polish world in the last 9 months. Many of the older ones that I have fallen in love with are now HTF. Every once in awhile prayers are answered and those that are HTF, are re-released. That was my experience with Dark Twisted Fantasies (DTF). I longed for the day this beauty would be mine. I searched high and low but no one was destashing it. Then, Krys announced it was coming back and the I heard angels sing.

Would you look at this beautiful color. Yes, add it to the list of must haves from Vapid. If you miss this, you will only blame and kick yourself later for missing it.

What goodies have you or do you plan on buying this month?

Swatch & Review: Jior Coutour – SWL The Sweets

PRESS SAMPLE NOTICE***Press (PR) Samples. This post contains polishes that were sent to be from the company/brand in exchange for an honest review, All opinions stated are my own. For additional info regarding PR samples, click here ***

Happy Monday and thanks for joining me here today. With official start of fall fast approaching, fall collections are all the rage. Makers and brands alike are finalizing the perfect fall inspired polishes that I’m sure will include shades of brown, orange,  burgundy, gold and green. These colors will scream hayrides, pumpkin patch, falling leaves, apple cider and cooler days. One brand that I have grown to love will be releasing their Fall Collection of 12, yes 12, polishes. Jior Couture will be releasing SWL (Sugar, Water, Lemons) on September 15th and this collection will feature 2 sets of 6 polishes, SWL: Sweet and SWL: Bitter.

Today I have all 6 Sweets to show you, so let’s jump right in!

SWL: The Sweets

**All swatches are taken over Commitment Issues Peel-Off Base Coat by Vapid and topped with Quick Dry, High Gloss Top Coat by Pro-FX. All swatch photos are taken using artificial lights.**

REFORMATION

Reformation is a blue jell base with multicolored flakes. To show its versatility, I have swatches (on the left) over a contrasting base using 2 coats of Splish Splash by China Glaze and 2 coats of Reformation. On the right, I have 4 coats of Reformation w/o a base color.

 RESURRECTION

Resurrection is a holo, multichrome shifting from golden yellow, olive green, magenta and red. Swatch shown in 2 coats.

FORGIVENESS

Forgiveness is a orange toned brown holo and a beautiful 1 coater.

HOPE

Hope is a sheer multichrome, microglitter that looks amazing over dark base colors. Swatches show with 2 coats over 2 coats of Charmed, I’m Sure by China Glaze.

REDEMPTION

Redemption is a blue to purple duochrome with a gorgeous shimmer. Swatch shown in 2 coats.

AWAKENED

Awakened is another multichrome that shift through amber red, bronze and a coppery, orange. Swatch shown in 2 coats.

Overall, I think this collection is stellar. Why? Because there are a variety of colors in a variety of finishes. This one collection would settle the hearts of nail addicts everywhere. The formulas are astonishing and the finishes are stunning. Application is trouble-free and there is no fishing for flakes in Reformation. BTW, I think Reformation w/o a base would be best suited for a pond mani. Hope…O.M.G., it can be worn alone but best as a topper that is sure to transform any base. I really couldn’t pick a favorite because they were all so different, but because I am a sucker for multichromes, Awakened was definitely the front-runner for me. Did any stand out to you? Will you be enjoying something Sweet with Jior Couture this fall?

The entire 12pc collection can be yours for only $95 or get the Sweets or the Bitters for $48 per set. Of course, they will be available individually for $8-8.50.

Swatcher Spotlight: Kaylyna Ramirez

Hello and happy Friday everyone! This week felt like it flew past, maybe because I was off Monday for Labor Day, but I’m not complaining. If you’ve checked my Post Schedule, you know it’s that time of the month again for another Swatcher Spotlight. This segment can be a little misleading being as though I interview both swatchers and blogger but Swatcher Spotlight has a ring to it..hehehe. Anyway, I know you can hardly contain your excitement and I can’t either because this month I am bringing you a young lady that I have quickly become good friends with, Kaylyna Ramirez aka KillaKays Nail Adventure!

You may be wondering how she got such a unique handle, I did too, but recently it came up in a FB post how names/handles came to be and this is what Kaylyna told us. “I was a bad@$$ growing up. Always getting into trouble so the neighborhood called me Killa Kay as I grew up the name stuck. I think mostly because a lot of the people don’t know how to say my name right. When I really got into nails they would say ‘look at Killa Kay’s nails’ but I like Nail Adventure better. My hubby makes fun of it but I like it. Makes me remember that just because you are a bad kid doesn’t mean you cant grow up.”

Let’s find out more out this lady making big waves in the indie nail community.

Name: Kaylyna Ramirez
Age: 26
Location: Treasure Coast, Florida

Q: Kids? If so, how many?
A: I have two kids. Daniel is 10 and Bella is 8

Q: Marital Status?
A: Good question. I’ve been with Oscar for 8 years now. I feel to old to say boyfriend. Lmao but no paper or ring so not hubby either haha

Q: Birthday?
A: February 27th Pisces Baby!

Q: Pets? If so, types and how many?
A: I have a rescued chihuahua named Mister and a Seal Point Siamese named Buddah they are the best of friends!

Q: Best Vacation Taken?
A: Thats hard. I think when we went to the Florida Keys for a week. We did so much! Went on snorkling excursion and everything. Kids loved it and so did we!

Q: Beach or Pool?
A: Ugh I love the beach but hate sand. Lmao but I’m still going beach. Nothing like the breeze and smell of salt water!

Q: Best character trait:
A: I’m loyal and honest.

Q: Favorite pastime?
A: I’d say reading. I read everything. Lmao and nails of course!

Q: Favorite food?
A: BREAD! and cheese. Ugh love it. So basically pizza with light sauce and extra cheese

Q: Movie night at home or theater:
A: At home snuggled on the couch!

Q: Favorite season?
A: Winter…well winter isn’t much here in Fl…lmao 🙂

Q: What got you started doing your nails?
A: I’ve always painted my nails even as a little girl. My mom use to have a wicker basket filled with polish. I was in heaven.

Q: What was the first brand you swatched for?
Kristen from In the Name of Polish gave me my first polishes to swatch. She is truly an awesome person! And it was when I like had 400 or less followers! On Instagram!

Q: What is your ‘go to’ cuticle oil?
A: Tropical Fusion by In the Name of Polish and I also love Mango Scented Cuticle oil/butter by From the Hands of an Angel

Q: Do you have swatch/mani routines?
A: Nope. I do it whenever I can. Daily. Never sure what time though. Lmao

Q: What tips would you give an aspiring swatcher?
A: Don’t give up. Apply. If you don’t get accepted. Wait a little while and apply again! And always try to improve. No one is perfect. There is ALWAYS room for improvement. You have to remember that an indie brand might not accept you because your lighting is wrong or you don’t have enough followers. Fix that. They run a business and have to have certain standards when choosing swatchers. Don’t give up!

Q: What’s one nail related item you can’t live without?
A: Tropical Fusion Cuticle Oil. I buy multiple from In the Name of Polish at a time lmao

Q: If you were to start an indie line of polish what would you name it and what would the first collection be inspired by?
A: Killa Polish probably. I’ve toyed with the idea just havent commited lmao and it would probably be a little mommy and me collection to be honest. For example. Mommys color would be a deep dark red while baby girls is a soft innocent pink. Lmao i dont know!

FYI…I love the unique idea of a mommy and me nail polish line, it’s just what my daughters and I need. BTW…just in case you were curious as to how to pronounce her name, it’s Kay-lee-nuh…lol and it’s one you’ll want to remember because you will be seeing a lot of her and her beautiful swatches. I hope you enjoyed getting to know Kaylyna and will join me back on the 2nd Friday of next month when I’ll feature a new swatcher/blogger. If you or someone you know deserves the spotlight on them, please feel free to leave their name in the comments or contact me on IG, FB or email.
